This is the fourth book in the "Deathgate Cycle" series By Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis.
This painting is a homage to Frank McCarthy. Granted, it's not western art, but hopefully the sense of action and the setting are reminiscent of some of his work, of course, portrayed in my own style.
This was the initally done as a Dragon Magazine cover. It was subsequently licenced for use on a book cover. Notice the tree on the flag? This is a Ranger, in the tradition of Tolkien/Gondor, guarding the borders of a town that doesn't even know he's there.
This cover commission came with an interesting requirement. The book was a collection of short stories and the publisher wanted the cover illustration to tie the stories together. Within the text one single person narrated the stories, and my job was to accentuate that and make it a selling point. The wizard I have illustrated was the narrator, and in this scene, he is in the process of narrating and magically writing a story. The books stacked around him represent various tales he's telling that also appear in the book
There is just nothing quite like getting your neck crushed and your head melted first thing in the morning. I admit, there have been mornings when I swore that's exactly what happened the night before, but that doesn't have much to do with dragons, unless you count being able to light your breath as draconian. So, anyway, I figured, when dragon fights, it would be merciless, and this head melting thing was a good way to make it clear.
This is the second book cover in David Eddings trilogy, "The Elenium." The book was called, "The Ruby Knight."
This is all about motion, curves, colors and drawing the viewers eye to the center of the piece. Nuff said.
This painting is one of the few that has never appeared on anything save in one of my artbooks, at least I think that's the case...
When Brad MxQuaid called me to illustrate the cover to the MMORPG Everquest, I had no ide how accepting the commision would change my life. After years of book covers that explored different areas, the subject matter in this game was a chance to get back to the things I loved so while working for TSR. I ha d the chance to paint ogres, trolls and beautiful women again. It was a lot of fun.
This is the third book in the "Deathgate Cycle" series By Tracy Hickman and Margaret Weis.
This is the first Terry Goodkind novel I painted a cover for...and the begining of a long run as Terry's cover artist and friend.
This was done during my "Paint a billion objects in the foreground" period. Painting that amount of anything takes a lot of time. Would I do it again? Not in the literal sense. Since this piece was done, I've learned faster and more efficient ways to suggest the amount of detail without actually painting every single bead. Instead, I'd focus more time and attention on the dragon and then, with all the extra time left, I'll take a nap.

A small study I called "Dragon in a stream". Again, apologies for the misleading title. I don't know what I was thinking
This was a cover to a book that was basically a retelling of "The Ring Cycle" made so famuous by Wagner.

This was the first Dragon Magazine cover I ever did. There is also a miniature figurine of this available from Darksword Miniatures.
