The Hugo Awards have been given annually for almost 50 years by members of the World Science Fiction convention in many categories including best books, dramatic presentation, and art. The 2002 awards were presented at ConJose, the 60th world convention over Labor Day weekend. This is Whelan’s 32nd nomination and he has won an unprecedented 15! The 2002 Locus Awards were presented July 5 at WesterCon in Los Angeles and Michael Whelan won as Best Artist for an unprecedented 22nd time! Author Harlan Ellison accepted the award for Whelan who was unable to attend the convention.
LOCUS magazine is the<\/i> periodical for both readers and professionals in the science fiction field and each year the Locus poll receives more ballots than the Hugo award. LOCUS readers voted Michael Whelan the best artist for 21 years in a row, but he lost by a brief margin last year, probably due to his diminishing output of cover art.
